It only took 3 weeks to fulfill one of the most unexpected courses, and that is the weaving workshop. I am so glad I did it, such a unique thing to learn! The classroom was filled with all sorts of looms, textiles, threads, and curious students just like me. The teacher was very kind, he started with a brief introduction on different styles of weaving, told us to consider what result we desire to achieve, whether it will be a usable product or a piece of art to decorate the walls, and our theme was anything Lapland-related.
A lot of freedom and space for creativity which I loved and found very stimulating, thus I started research on all kinds of weaving techniques and eventually ended up creating a piece that would include all of them just for the sake of learning and experimenting. My subject was snow, hence the fibres had no other colours but white and off-white, and all various textures, distinctly braided, knotted, or weaved.
By the end of it, I was very proud and happy to have taken part in an opportunity like this, having learnt to use the big scary complex-looking looms and completed quite an intricate piece. it was a blast and working on it brought a lot of joy to all of us. It’s fascinating how people from different artistic spheres can come together and bring their knowledge into a completely new area of expression. All final pieces were distinctively and beautifully thought-out and executed.
